Behind the Scenes - The Twin Flames
The making of Summit's hottest superhero couple!
Hey everybody! I’m J. Michael Miller, Summit Comics Group Editor, and I’m happy for the chance to give you a behind the scenes look at how The Twin Flames sparked into existence.
FROM CONCEPT TO COMIC BOOK
When Summit was first starting off, I felt like I was struggling to keep up. There were so many cool ideas and messages bouncing around from my fellow indie comic creators inside our Discord. Meanwhile, I was headed to a drive-in to watch Disney’s Elio and The Fantastic Four: First Steps with the family right before we left for a weeks-long camping trip. So, I scoured through some of my previous ideas for something that really stood out. How often do we get to see an ideal couple given nearly identical powers at the same time? Especially without having to share a limited power source? So, The Twin Flames were born.
But before Pete created design sheets, before I doodled costumes in crayon, and before any of us had thought about Summit Comics, it had to start as an idea. The Twin Flames first flew into head in 2022 when I sent this to my wife.
Now we’ve got an idea and character designs. That’s still not a story. That’s still not a comic book. So, I set out to introduce The Twin Flames in Summit: Pinnacle #1. I had a few goals in mind when writing this script.
SUMMIT: PINNACLE #1 AND BEYOND!
How do you introduce two new superheroes within a connected universe in only eight pages?
You create a checklist of everything you need to cross off to tell your story.
I wanted to add details in my scripts that show, in subtle ways, that this takes place on A-Day, which is the kicking off point for most (but not all) things Summit.
I wanted to show them be heroic before they get their powers to display their “worthiness” but I needed us to get to see them suit up for the first time too.
I wanted to start the explanation for their powers without dumping a ton of exposition and lore.
In other words, I wanted this to have everything you could want but leave you asking for more.
