Behind the Scenes - UPHEAVAL
Learn more about Upheaval
So, about a year ago. I created my first superhero.
UPHEAVAL
This was created because I wanted my company, ORANGE CONE PRODUCTION, to have a SUPERHERO in its line because what is more COMIC BOOK than a SUPERHERO book.
Little did I know, not 4 months after this release, in my comic creator discord, a few of my friends and I would create what is now called THE SUMMIT UNIVERSE
So, now we have the SUMMIT UNIVERSE, and we need to put UPHEAVAL into this new universe. She is now going to be one of the first books at launch and will meld into the pages of this big book called PINNACLE. We also have now a UNIVERSE of like 30+ characters. VERY COOL stuff. However, one problem. I am already working on UPHEAVAL 2. In issue 2, we started building out the UPHEAVAL UNIVERSE. We wanted to add a bunch of new characters to flesh out our ORLANDO area.
We created 3 - REVERB, MASCOT, and SOLORANA.
We’ve built a full universe packed with strong characters—and with that, we’re expanding the world in a much bigger way. We decided to make Orlando as much of a character in UPHEAVAL as the heroes themselves, the same way Marvel treats Manhattan as the heartbeat of its universe. Orlando isn’t just a setting—it’s a living, breathing presence, filled with history, culture, danger, and hope… and it’s overflowing with heroes and vigilantes trying to shape what it becomes.
What makes this even more powerful is that the city’s trauma is real, and it echoes through the characters. In fact, both Mascot and Reverb have origin stories directly connected to the Pulse shooting, tying their creation to one of the darkest moments in Orlando’s history—and turning that tragedy into the spark that fuels their fight to protect the city moving forward.
However, these are all my comic characters. What about SUMMIT CHARECTERS?? Our community built this great group, but we haven’t utilized all the SUMMIT CHARACTERS. Well, let me show you a page we did for the ORANGE CONE version we were making before
In panel 2 of the ORANGE CONE version, we talk about some heroes of the universe, and in the first version, they were generic. Just designed made by BRIAN WOLF because I needed it for this scene of the story. We had no intention of using these characters.
In the new version, we have SUMMIT CHARECTERS as well as a couple of indie cameos that we put in the panel.
This is better. Now these characters actually matter. They aren’t just background faces—they feel like people you can follow, invest in, and slowly uncover as the story grows. And honestly, I think I may have forgotten that for a moment when I originally wrote that scene.
One of the things I’ve always loved about comics is spotting someone in the background and thinking, “Wait… who the hell is that?” That curiosity is what makes a universe feel alive. I still remember the first time I saw Hawk and Dove tucked into the background of a DC book, and it sent me down a rabbit hole. Suddenly I wasn’t just reading one story—I was discovering an entire world.
That’s what comics should do. They should spark your imagination, make you ask questions, and make you want to explore more. When you build a world where every character looks like they have a story, readers start to believe that anything can happen—and that there’s always something bigger waiting just off the page.
So, that’s all I got for you today!! If you are interested in UPHEAVAL #2. Please consider backing it!!
